Feel Better - Move Better - Live Better

In October, I’ll, Deborah Lohrenz, be celebrating my 65th birthday. As I approach this milestone, I find myself reflecting deeply on my life—the dreams I've chased, the accomplishments I've achieved, and the relationships I've cherished. Time has flown by, like a dream or the blink of an eye. I've thought a lot about the friends I've made along the way, the people I went to school with, people I worked with -some of whom are no longer with us. This reflection has led me to a profound realization: the most important time we have is NOW.

Instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, embracing the present moment has become essential to me. With this mindset, I’ve penned down some thoughts on aging, which I’d love to share with you. It’s a bit like a written podcast—a journey through my experiences and insights that I hope will resonate with you.

AGING: THE ULTIMATE EQUALIZER

Aging is a universal experience, one that transcends all boundaries of race, gender, social status, and wealth. No matter who we are or where we come from, aging is the ultimate equalizer. It's a journey that we all embark on from the moment we're born, and it brings with it a wealth of changes, challenges, and opportunities for growth.

The Unavoidable Passage of Time

Time is a constant force that moves forward, unaffected by our desires or efforts to control it. As we age, we accumulate experiences, memories, and wisdom. This journey shapes us into unique individuals, each with our own stories and perspectives. Despite the diverse paths we may take, the passage of time affects us all equally, reminding us of our shared humanity.

Physical Changes and Shared Experiences

One of the most noticeable aspects of aging is the physical transformation. Our bodies change in ways that are both visible and subtle. We may notice wrinkles, gray hair, and a decrease in physical stamina. These changes are universal signs of aging that connect us to others who are on the same journey. While some may view these changes with apprehension, they also serve as a testament to the lives we've lived and the experiences we've gathered.

Kindness and Non-judgmental

As we grow older, the importance of kindness and being non-judgmental becomes ever clearer. Life is too short to hold onto negativity or to judge others for their choices and circumstances. Every person we meet is fighting their own battles, and a simple act of kindness can make a significant difference. By approaching others with empathy and understanding, we foster a sense of community and support that enriches our lives and the lives of those around us.

Living with Integrity

Integrity is the cornerstone of a life well-lived. Regardless of our profession or social standing, living with integrity means staying true to our values and principles. It's about doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. As we age, we realize that our actions and decisions define our character. By living with integrity, we earn the respect and trust of others, leaving a legacy that speaks volumes about who we are.

Respecting All Professions

In the grand scheme of life, our professions are just one part of our identity. Whether you were a doctor, lawyer, CEO, garbage collector, customer service representative, nurse, teacher, mail carrier, IT professional, researcher, therapist, etc., every profession holds respect and value. Each role contributes to the fabric of society, and it's our character and how we treat others that truly matter. No matter how prestigious or humble our job, we want to be remembered for our kindness, integrity, and the positive impact we've made on those around us.

Wisdom and Perspective

With age comes wisdom, a deeper understanding of life that only years of experience can provide. The challenges and triumphs we face contribute to our growth, offering valuable lessons that shape our outlook on life. This wisdom is a gift that can be shared with others, fostering connections and bridging generational gaps. By embracing the knowledge that comes with age, we can inspire and guide those who follow in our footsteps.

The Value of Connections

Aging also highlights the importance of relationships and community. As we grow older, the bonds we form with family, friends, and loved ones become even more significant. These connections provide support, comfort, and joy throughout the aging process. The shared experience of aging can strengthen these bonds, reminding us of the value of companionship and empathy.

The Importance of Being Humble

Humility is a virtue that becomes increasingly important as we age. Recognizing that we do not have all the answers and that we can always learn from others fosters a mindset of continuous growth and self-improvement. Being humble allows us to appreciate the contributions and strengths of others, regardless of their status or profession. It helps us stay grounded, grateful, and open to new experiences and perspectives. Embracing humility not only enriches our own lives but also positively impacts those around us, creating an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

Embracing Aging with Grace

While the inevitability of aging can be daunting, it's important to approach it with a positive mindset. Embracing the aging process allows us to appreciate the journey and the wisdom it brings. By focusing on the positive aspects of aging, we can live fulfilling lives and continue to contribute meaningfully to our communities.

In conclusion, aging is the ultimate equalizer, a shared experience that unites us all. It reminds us of our common humanity and the importance of embracing each stage of life with grace and gratitude. As we navigate the passage of time, let's celebrate the wisdom, connections, and growth that come with aging, and cherish the journey that makes us who we are. Let us also remember that it is our kindness, integrity, humility, and the way we treat others that will leave the most lasting impression.
